Does anyone have current knowledge about the taxi situation at New Orleans station when the Crescent comes in? It's after dark, and I want to make sure there will be no trouble getting a cab. I know the population is way down in the New Orleans area and wonder how much this has affected the number of available cab drivers. Thanks!

I cannot address availability at the station at train arrival time, however I heard a radio (NPR) interview last week with a cab driver currently working in NO. They are there, but getting place to place takes a lot longer as many traffic lights are out and traffic doesn't flow well. If you are not going far from the station that may not be an issue.

OT Ms Sojourner; I'm not sure why you withdrew your posting on the Port of Politics (especially right while I was preparing a posting), but here is where to discuss such.

Others here (Mr. Smith??) may wish to join.

Gilbert, I did not withdraw my posting; it disappeared. I assumed someone thought it was OT and deleted it.

I was aware that CSX had sold its international ports to the UAE concern and wondered where those ports were and how containers came through them.

I used your link and found your post, but I cannot figure out where the whole strand is and where I should have posted. Sorry about that!

Getting back to my question regarding the taxis, does anyone who has been to New Orleans since Katrina and the trains reopening have any info? I am not concerned about delays at traffic lights so much as needing to know that I can phone a taxi (even if the train is late) and ensure one will be there to pick me up at the train station and take me to the French Quarter.

Thanks!

There are taxis but they charge a flat $11 to anywhere until you reach that then it goes up.
I was there in December and was told that was the policy until it gets revoked someday in the future.

Thanks for the info, Chris. I won't mind paying whatever the going rate is; just need to know there will be a taxi available when I come in on the Crescent.

OT--Gilbert, I found my posting re that CSX question; someone moved it to "Miscellaneous," which is certainly more appropriate than my having posted it here. I don't know where your response and the rest of the strand went, though!
