Yikes! I was hoping to take that dome car, book a night in Montreal, visit a friend near Ottawa, and then return BUT the hotel prices in Montreal are almost as bad as NYC! Given their high add-on taxes, I guess I'm not going to be able to take the dome car unless anyone has any good (recent) hotel advice. Because I will be taking the train in and out of Montreal, I need to stay reasonably close to the train staiton, preferably 15-minute walk. Hotel must be safe, clean, and comfortable; don't need fancy. Also, I need one where I can cancel if need be without penalty--no inns or B&Bs. Thanks!

I agree with Mr. Norman. The Queen Elizabeth (Reine Elizabeth) is so convenient. In fact the railway porters in the station will take your luggage directly to the hotel, which is attached to Central Station. If you find this hotel too pricey, you may want to consider the Delta hotel which is just across the street from the station, however, it is not connected with Montreal's underground city, so you will actually have to go outside and cross the street. Other hotels in Montreal that I am familar with (and are connected to the underground city) are the ex-CP Chateau Champlain (now operated by Marriott) and the Bonaventure, a Westin Hotel.

We booked a trip for this weekend in Montreal by using Priceline. With their fees, we are paying $80 a night at the Quality Inn Downtown, a very easy walk from Central Station. We stayed there last year and were very pleased with it. Its only a two block walk from the Metro and there are restaurants and pubs within walking distance of the hotel.
We use Priceline to book most of our hotels and it is economical. The queen Elizabeth, while convenient runs at least $160 a night. If you don t mind a bit of a walk there are fine hotels in the downtown area.
We got reservations for this Saturday Northbound to Montreal with the dome and southbound on Monday. I didn't want to miss the opportunity this year!

The Queen Elizabeth is now over $200, way above my budget. Thanks for the tip about Quality Inn. Is this the one at 1214 Crescent? The reviews at trip advisor are not very good, so I wasn't sure I should try it--more than one mentions bedbugs. I'd think maybe these were just weird complainers but the management says something about having taken care of the problem!
Can you confirm I should feel safe going to this place, even if my train is very late? Thanks so much . . .

In May we stayed in a B&B on Rue St Denis in the Latin Quarter, a 10 minute walk from the UQAM Metro Station (there is an even closer station, but it involves a change of trains at UQAM, I could check my map for the name if needed). We loved the neighborhood, but since I didn't make the reservations, I don't know their policy on cancellations. PM me if you want the name.

Sojourner..yes that is the Quality Inn at Crescent Street. I stayed there last September. The place seemed clean and safe and in the middle of everything. We spent a few days there. We did get the good deal through Priceline. They always have decent hotels in their listing. The price might be over $100 booking directly,but we paid $80 with the booking fee thouugh Priceline.
Good luck, and I hope you get to make that trip. A dome car through the Adirondacks and that view of Lake Champlain through the peak of the foliage sounded like a deal too good to pass up.
By the way, the Quality Inn is about a ten to fifteen minute walk from Central station.

OK, I'm decided, I am going! I booked one hotel (not far from Quality Inn) and closer to the day of travel will try for something cheaper. I am still not priceline conversant, but I'll figure something out.
BTW, the Queen Elizabeth was BOOKED. There is some kind of hotel workers' strike affecting larger hotels, so they don't have all their rooms available. It would have been even more money, anyway, though more convenient.
