The following media release suggests that demand for Acela tickets has softened:

AMTRAK OFFERS NEW LOW FARES ON ACELA EXPRESS

Up to 25% off previous lowest fares with advance purchase

WASHINGTON – Beginning March 3, Amtrak will offer a new low fare on its premier Acela Express trains, saving passengers up to 25 percent on previous lowest fares. Now available for purchase, Acela Business class tickets will be priced as low as $99 between Washington, DC (WAS) and New York (NYP), and $79 between New York and Boston (BOS).

The new low fares are available for purchase now for travel between March 3 and June 26. A 14-day advance purchase policy applies, and availability is limited. The tickets are one-way and nonrefundable, but can be exchanged. Tickets purchased at the low fare are not eligible for an upgrade to First class accommodations. Until now, the lowest fare available on Acela between WAS and NYP was $133, and $93 between BOS and NYP.

“As Amtrak becomes an increasingly popular way to travel, these new low fares on Acela will make our flagship service more affordable for business and leisure travelers,” said Emmett Fremaux, vice president of marketing and product management.

Spin Docs at work, Mr. Kisor.

Might this be more closer to the reason for offering such fares?

GBN, sure. The Dow's circling the toilet most likely softens ticket demand across the board.

But I would hardly expect a transportation company to spin the situation otherwise. Marketing and public relations always tries to put the most cheerful face on a situation, even if nobody's fooled.

What portfolio? Oh, you mean that chump change mine has turned into.

Maybe we ought to ask Railforum to start a Riding the Rods forum, for those of us who are becoming involuntary bindlestiffs.

When I went to school in San Luis Obispo (many years ago), a roommate and I would occaisionally hop a freight train over cuesta grade into Santa Maria, have a few at the Elephant Bar (I think), then hithchike back to Cal Poly. Of course this was and is a big no-no, and I'd read the riot act to my kids if they tried it today, but at the time, it was a blast. Now, I LIKE riding inside, and have to face the fact that I cannot retire and do so regularly for several more years than I had hoped only 3 years ago!
