According to the website, 7-8 have been routed over the historic route of the Empire Builder and Western Star via New Rockford. This was the routing that prevailed until A-Day. Grand Forks was served both by the Winnipeg Limited at 0dark30 and by the Dakotan during people hours.
The Incorporators desired to have service remain to Grand Forks and accordingly rerouted the Amtrak Builder over the more circuitous route.

Mr. Norman, although things may have changed by A-day, my 1958 Great Northern timetable shows ONLY the Empire Builder using the Surrey cut-off. The Western Star rolled through Grand Forks at about 3pm in both directions. The Western Star also diverted from the Empire Builder route to serve St. Cloud and Alexandria MN, as well as Great Falls MT.
The secondary GN mainline through Minnesota used by the Western Star, now mostly abandoned, is along the current route of Interstate 94.
The GN Winnipeg Limited did not go through Grand Forks or Fargo but was routed east of there through Crookston, MN (indeed at the infamous 0dark30). Northern Pacific's train to Winnipeg went via Grand Forks.
