You may remember that I was unhappy to learn that my trip on #5 in July was going to be detoured thru Wyoming. And although Wyoming is nice, I wanted to go through the tunnels of the regular route.
Anyway, I have rebooked a different trip with new (to me) trains. I'm taking the Texas Eagle from Chicago to connect to the Sunset to LA to visit a college roommate. The up the coast via the Starlight (hopefully with a PPC unlike last time!) to PDX. 4 days at Mount Rainier to feed my soul, then back to PDX and home to Milwaukee. The CHI -> LAX is a new route for me
I'm smiling again - there's a train trip coming up in just over 6 weeks!

My new "default" station (EKH) has no baggage service or QuikTrak machine, but the parking is free! And the NY Central RR Museum is just across the tracks (but not open at Amtrak train times. . ..)

Actually, the Wyoming detour isn't that bad --the CZ, of course, formerly used that route(prior to 1983) -- it's not forested and mountainous, and there are no major river valleys it follows like on the current CZ route through CO, but Wyoming is actually kind of an intersting place to see -- miles and miles and miles of dry desert landscape, but you do see several mountainous areas off in the distance, and a few nice railroad cuts (that's the geologist in me talking!!), plus a lot of cattle and cowboys!!

Hmmmmm -- I think the Train Web computer clock needs to be reset. I know all the times listed for each post are Pacific time, which is 3 hours behind our time here in Fla., but the above post, made at "3:43 AM" Pacific time, was actually made at 5 AM PT (8 AM here in Florida!)

I've always preferred fast, wide-open running to intricate, agonizingly slow mountain running...I know that's a sacrilegious statement to the Rockies/DRG&W fans here; sorry! Isn't the running time on the UP Main between SLC and DEN 2-3 hours faster than the route through CO? I remember seeing massive herds of antelope running next to the CZ in the early-80s; powering up Sherman Hill, and stopping at those interesting cowtowns in WY. Not as traditionally "scenic" as the old DRGW line, but still dramatic in its own way. I would not cancel a CZ trip, due to a WY re-route, but that's just me. Still, your trip sounds great, Judy--have fun!
