Their lead story this morning was about passenger rail, mostly centering on HSR plans for the Golden State. Interesting profile of the guy who's been behind the planning in California for the last 30 years.

And it was just this week that a judge ruled an initial EIR was not adequate for the route, although I am under the impression this was simpley used as a tool by those who want a different route from SF to the Central Valley.

Working on a high speed rail system is not a job for someone who wants instant gratification.
The recent court case is an attempt by people in Menlo Park and Atherton (two communities between San Francisco and San Jose for the information of those who are not local) to stop the system from coming through their towns. They seem to think that life as we know it on this planet will end if the HSR is built through their towns, even though it will be almost entirely on the existing right of way used by the Caltrain commuter service, and is supposed to eliminate all existing grade crossings.

Yes, and coming from one who has not been on the Left Coast in now twenty years (not a boycott, just no reason), it should be evident why Menlo Park does "not exactly" favor HSR blasting through the center of their "tony little town'. Even if as expected the ROW were to be elevated, that would do a good job of bisecting the town.
Starting with a Google Map query of Menlo Park CA, twirl Little Google Man about for more lay of the land; move him Northward along El Camino Real to see what the folk in Atherton might think of HSR blasting through their groves of Ficus trees.
Oh and how do I know anything about Menlo Park? A now-deceased (one of two such in this life) girlfriend resided there (Roble Ave) after she relocated to take a position with SRI International.
