We are working on ways to get to our next two cruises. We are planning on flying to Jacksonville, FL, to do some visiting and then are considering taking the train to Miami. How about some advice on this? I believe it's about a 10 hour ride. Would it be worth it to use some AGR points for a sleeper for the meal and privacy?

We have a room at the Airport Marriott for the night before the cruise. Where is the MIA train station in relation to that? A reasonable cab ride?

Thanks in advance.

Frank, here you go

5.4miles; $15 should do it.

Unfortunately, there does not appear to be any bargain Sleeper rates JAX-MIA

Sometimes there might be a good rate. I know there was recently, but I ran it from Orlando, where more people are detraining, so more rooms become available

Thanks, Mr. Norman.

Any opinions about the ride itself? I'll check it out on the Amtrak site but was hoping for some suggestions here.

I just spent some time on the Amtrak site. I noticed that they suggest Hollywood as the stop for MIA with connecting service to the Airport Station on Tri-Rail. There is supposed to be a shuttle to the actual airport from there.

Somehow, it seems to me that it would just be easier to ride to the end of the line and take a cab directly to the hotel.

Frank, I'm originally from Miami and still ride downt here from time to time. First off, do not waste AGR points for such a short trip. You'll get more bang for the buck to sometime take a long overnight (or two) trip. Sometimes sleeper fares JAX-MIA are reasonable (for Amtrak). Otherwise, I suggest booking coach JAX-Orlando or Winter Park and a room from there to Miami. When planning note that the Silver Star leaves JAX earlier than the Silver Meteor but tkes about 2 hours longer as it runs via Tampa while the meteor is direct south of Orlando. The Star offers more ride for your money but the early departure and longer ride may discourage you. The Miami Airport Marriott is about 5 or 6 miles from the Amtrak station and I'd ride to Miami then take a taxi. Transferring to TriRail at Hollywood could result in a long layover if you just miss a southbound, you could have to haul luggage over a walkway to the other track, and the airport station is still about a mile from the hotel thus requiring a cab anyway. Note that the Marriott is across the highway from the airport.
