The pictures, located and posted by Mr. Norman, under the topic, "Nice Gesture for our Wounded Vets" got me thinking about something.

Can anyone recall, for special events, where an entire classic, old passenger train was hooked up for participation in the event? Not just the locomotive, but the locomotive(s) and rolling stock. I know Coast Daylight loco 4449 has been pulled for some special events, such as the ones at the Calif. State RR Museum events. However, how often has the 4449, complete with old Daylight rolling stock, participated in an event?

What about other famous tains?..it would be nice to see an entire Santa Fe Chief train pull into the depot in Flagstaff or a 50's era Great Northern train arrive in East Glacier, complete with some of the old dome cars.

Thanks for the link, Richard. I have fond memories of traveling on the Daylight from Glendale to San Francisco in the '50's. And I remember when the full trainset came through Santa Barbara, an event that is commemorated by a tile mosaic in the wall as you enter the SBA station parking lot.

Glad to post the Daylight video, Frank. Glad you enjoyed it..what a magnificent train! I know the full Daylight trainset has shown up, ocassionally, for special events. I have to think to think that other great complete trains have been activated, as well.

How authentic is that trainset? I remember, as a kid, being fascinated by the elevator that each coach car had to take bags up into the car. Sort of the beginning of today's "carry on" trend but, of course, there was a helpful porter there to load your bags and retrieve them on arrival.

I also remember the three unit diner/lounge. Being the little imp that I was (I know Vicki finds that hard to believe!) I used to like to straddle the joint in the floor. I've been know to do that up to the present on articulated busses!

Frank, there are several "Daylight" Coaches in the consist. Those are the "postwar" cars with the exceptionally large windows, that I had the privilege to ride Portland to Oakland on the Shasta during May 1962.

From this video clip (trailer for Bad Day at Black Rock) are views (look quick of course) of "prewar" Daylight equipment:

Must say, wouldn't mind coming into the "outtake" from that flick.

I wish I had the opportunity, Mr. Norman, to take the Shasta back in the 1960's or earlier. Must have been a very scenic trip.

Here is a timetable for the Shasta Daylight from 1950:

http://www.streamlinerschedules.com/concourse/track7/shastadaylt195008.html

I thought that the timetable would show the Shasta going up, from Dunsmuir, to Medford, Grants Pass, and Eugene, following present day I-5. The route depicted, however, follows the present route from Dunsmuir to Klamath and then over to Eugene. When did they change? (post WWII?)

I never saw the movie "Bad Day at Black Rock". Looks like it had a really great cast. I'll see if Netflix has it.

The movie "A River Runs Through It" had a couple of really nice, but brief, scenes of a Northern Pacific train coming into the depot in Helena, Montana (circa early 1920's). I know they can do wonders with computerized scenes, but the loco and passenger cars looked very real, with the dark brown and gold paint scheme.

The Natron Cutoff from Eugene to Kalamath Falls through Cascade Summit, i.e. the present day route of the Starlight, was completed during 1926, rendering the arduous line through Medford, or route of I-5, to secondary status.

My favorite timetable from the fifties, which I have since lost, was for the Shasta Daylight. It was a single page, accordion folded probably 2-3 feet long by about 4 inches wide with a beautiful detailed picture map running vertically alongside the timetable. In addition to times, there was a narrative about points of interest along the journey.

Unfortunately I only collected timetables and never got to ride the western trains. My parents always drove.

As we speak, the Kansas City Southern Railroad business train is in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl.

I would suspect the Union Pacific Railroad business train is out at the Fiesta or the Rose Bowl.
