I ran across this post on "The Union Depot", a Facebook page for SPUD (Saint Paul Union Depot).
"In honor of R.E.M.'s split after 31 years of music, here's their 1985 video for "Driver 8," a song that refers to the Southern Crescent, a passenger train operated by the Southern Railroad until 1979, and continues today (with fewer stops) as the Amtrak Crescent. Take a break, Driver 8."

Oh, and here is the link to the SPUD Facebook page for those who are interested and use Facebook. There are some good photos of the restoration.
I allow the reader to decide to what extent "license" has been taken by the lyricist.
