You have a way of originating "lightning rod" discussion around here.
I was a twelve year old (white) kid residing in Greenwich CT and attending a private day school. There was The New York Times sitting on the Breakfast table including this linked article (front page, right column, banner headline):
I don't think my college educated Mother really knew. It was just a different world; and at school, I'm not sure did the homeroom teacher, even though she held up to the class that issue of The Times, as well as the more conservative New York paper from that age, the Herald Tribune.
I don't think I had ever met an African-American kid. Only had seen aboard Subways in New York.
Acutally a few days later, I overheard the school janitor talking "Oh, so N- kids are going to school with Whites,,,,humoh"
That was my introduction to your world, Mrs. Hale.

I hope it's not too much of a lightning rod! My husband said he was "uncomfortable" when he read the post and told me I might offend people by using the exact language I used. I don't mind making people "uncomfortable" with our past history... but, I certainly did not intend to offend. Thanks for the NYTimes article link. I enjoy reading your posts and have noticed that some of the other forum members hold you in high esteem! If you would ever consider writing your "how I became a railfan" story for me to post on my blog, I would love that!!! I think you are an interesting fellow, although I know little about you!
