Excerpt: (Mobile Mayor Sam) "Jones said it's an important issue in Mobile, where the primary transportation options since Katrina have been automobiles and plane, both of which he described as "too costly."
He said the meeting will allow mayors and other officials to decide "the best approach to get the service started again." He said the regional line would open the region to train service across the country and make attractions like beaches and casinos more accessible. And Jones hopes any new line would be more convenient than the one that ran through Mobile seven years ago — it rolled through the city at 3 a.m."

Perhaps an Amcoach - equipped day train running NOL - JAX and connecting with the LD trains at both ends would be more do - able than trying to extend the Sunset eastward again.

Mr. Nicholson, I think what is being overlooked is that Amtrak's strategy of "indefinite suspension", notwithstanding some concern on my part, to be rid of service over the JAX-NOL route has been successful. With this victory in hand, why consider any options to restore service over the route?
Hope the elected officials have a fun time in Montgomery; sorry their taxpayers have to pony up for such nonsense. Possibly Ms. Sojourner has some recommendations of ethnic cuisine restaurants where they can "eat on the cheap".
