In the meantime, Amtrak may just adjust its timetables and build the chronic delays into its schedule, so at least passengers will have a better idea of what they're in for.
Which, in doing so, causes delays on the days where there aren't so many delays. Can't win.

From Hilton Garden Inn, Tifton GA--

Sob Sob, Class I railroads do not exist for 'bargain basement' customers like Amtrak.

I love how people who do not have the first clue about the issues involved can come up with a solution to it. True example of talk is cheap.

I wish the Northern Pacific RR would make a comeback for trout fishing on the Yellowstone River.

Any idea or feeling whether this might be a long term problem through the summer? Or does it maybe have something to do with the present heating oil shortages across the nation? I'll be riding the Empire Builder in June and connecting with the S-bound Coast Starlight in Portland.

Besides Bakken crude oil, the coal and grain trains have added to the congestion according to this article:

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2013/12/23/212551/oil-grain-trains-squeeze-amtraks.html

Hopefully, the warmer summer weather might ease the congestion during your June trip, Rich.

I don't know the answer to the problem. There has been talk about a 2nd Empire Builder from Chicago to St. Paul. If so, could they run that further west?
