What has gone wrong? I bought two business class Surfliner tickets on line using AGR points. Got the emails.

The trips do not show in the Amtrak app. I can bring them up by entering the reservation number but they still won't show in My Reservation area, just in the Recent Lookup area. And can't get them to appear in Passbook at all, even by scanning the code thing.

No problem for boarding as I have the email print out. But strange that they won't appear in my app etc.

Miss Victoria, on topic of sorts, but when again are you and Mr.Art coming through Chicago enroute to Boston?

Save for a trip to family in New York area, which will be by auto as, after Business Class over to Munich and back, it will be hard to return to "the back of the bus" - and on a puddle jumper at that.

Frank (and Maureen), your outfit did a good job of "spoiling" me. The only "negative" on the return EDDM-KORD, and this was no fault of United's whatever, when I showed up about ten minutes before flight time (pushed ten minutes late account something that had the Captain running aft - oh well, on the ground), this lady seated on the aisle, said to me (to the effect of) "why did you have to show up, they would have upgraded my Son to sit here'. I didn't say it but between the ears was thinking "hey lady, I'm paying for this, not freeloading" (I think in real life she does a lot more to keep United Airlines in business than do I). Otherwise, she simply flashed the signals "if you have to get out, bother me, otherwise don't".

All part of my earlier thought at another topic - travel by any means of commercial transportation is a communal experience.

Gil, I have cancelled my planned trip across country to Boston, too many nights on the train.

So there is no Chicago visit in our future.

Vickie, with all the experience Amtrak has in the passenger rail business, you can rest assured that the customer will be their number one priority. Most of the time they will pick up some or all of their passengers regardless of their eticket status. But in small stations, such as New York City, sometimes they do forget to pick up any passengers. Amtrak employees are only human. They have a lot on their mind. The part about picking up people at stations is so easy to forget.

You can take comfort in knowing that if they forget to pick up enough of you, you get free Dorito's!

My sister is trying to book flights for my parents to come visit me in the US. Go on the Virgin Atlantic US site and a return on 15th August is available. Go on the UK site and for the exact same flight it's not - fully booked.

Stay at a hotel for which you're eligible for an upgrade on a space available basis. Not upgraded, "we are so full sir". Check availability online for such rooms at 11pm that night: plenty available.

Booking systems have a life of their own.

Well, since this topic now seems 50-50 between planes and trains, as good as anywhere to relate my lag experience on my overseas trip.

All told, lag affected me for two days in both directions. To what extent that was affected by my choice to pony up for Business Class I know not. What I do know is that Eastward, I got maybe two hours of sleep, none whatever returning.

I was not in much shape to be a good reporter for the Rail Jet ride Munich Salzburg. Nor was I exactly happy to be confronted with not being able to make the lights in the hotel room work (had to put your key card in a slot near the door - new to a guy who had not been overseas in 24 years).

Since I would presume that I am roundly same age as Mr Mayo's Mother and Father, I would guess this is what to expect. But then, since I'm hardly the traveler that some around here are, possibly lag is less for them who are.

Putting your key card in a slot near the door to activate the lights/AC/TV is not unusual. I'd be surprised if no hotels in the US had it. It's simply an energy saving idea, one that can be overcome with a relatively rigid business card.

My parents are in their early 60s and still working. It's a surprise for them.

I have to agree, Mr. Mayo, such is an energy saving idea. Also at the hotel, the hall lights were dim until someone opened their door or alighted the elevator.

But I guess in a land where premium gas is US$8.18 a US gallon (EU 1.59/lit), conservation of energy represents a way of life.

Salzburg at night is no Vegas; but I was never concerned about walking the 1.2km from Fespielhaus to the hotel after dark, which was near the Hbf. I did however practically stumble over a Gypsy who had set up shop (panhandling) practically in front of the hotel.

We experienced dim hallway lights on our June trip and the keycard in the slot to operate room lights at our hotel in Turin, Italy. It was a first (the keycard) for us and were it not for the hotel porter we might still be stumbling around our room at the Hotel Diplomatic!
