From this Brief Passage, it would appear this author "tried out" for Amtrak Writer's, but apparently didn't make the cut:
The idea to transform seat 16B into a writer’s studio was inspired by an Amtrak offer in the United States for a writer’s residency program on its long-distance treks. The whimsical notion reaped a bonanza of free publicity on social networks and attracted 16,000 applications for 24 slots for scribes who were picked in September to ride in a roomette with a view.
Their railroad garrets are equipped with a bed, desk, maid service and meal delivery.
Come to think of it, a review of the Rail Europe page shows that SNCF "Express d' Nuit" is "not exactly" Wagon Lit any more. All that is offered is four or six person Couchettes. I've had my "once in a lifetime", Madrid-Sevilla during 1990, with those.
Finally, reiterating earlier thoughts, rail travel in Europe is "not exactly" cheap. My Munich-Salzburg (148miles each way) during July was US$183 (about $171 with the weaker Euro today), although I'll concede that with a little advance planning, it could have been much less.
