I know many combine Amtrak vacations with commercial flights.
Sometime in 2016, you will need a passport or "national ID card", not a drivers license, to pass airport security in New York, New Hampshire, Minnesota, and Louisiana:

If you click on Mr. Norman's (Homeland Security) link, I found it useful to click on "Frequently Asked Questions for the Public", in the upper left section of the article. However, I still have a number of questions which, I guess, will only be answered with time.

That's not quite what it says. It says you'll need ID that meets their requirements, and driving licenses from those states do not meet those requirements (and much older licenses from other states). So if you have a CA driving license, that's good enough to get on a flight from JFK. But if you only have a NY driving license then you won't be able to board at LAX.

This is getting rediculous. It is time someone reined in these power hogs. But then I still find the need to be able to prove who you are in order to travel to be nonsensical.
