Hello,

I am looking for some information and was hoping you could point me in the right direction. I am doing research on trains and I need to know how many passenger trains there are in the U.S. as well as how many people ride these trains daily and how long the average ride is. I also need to find the same information for subway systems in the U.S.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Mike Sheppard

Hi Mike,
You may want to try to contact the transportation board in Washington D.C. on the statistics your looking for. They would have info on all current passenger trains running here in the U.S. and may have info on subway trains as well. This would be one point I would think that would have a wealth of information on the state of railroading in concern to passenger ridership. Other places to look maybe historical societies or actual sites (like Amtrak itself) and contact them with your inquiries thru their e-mail and see what you get. it's a though but it might set you in the direction your looking for.

Try the Bureau of Transportation Statistics for numbers of rail passengers, names of the operating companies.
www.bts.gov

Try Amtrak for general information (or visit their website): www.amtrak.com

The American Public Transit Association (www.apta.com) publishes an annual compilation of statistics on commuter rail, rapid transit, and bus operators.

That should get you started.
