How many times have you herd that, Amtrak always says that, But sometimes it happens, once it happend 2 times on one trip!
Alot of poeple dont listen to the anouncement,then step on to say bye to someone, and dont get off in time, I've seen Amtrak stop the train or back it up a little to let off an "extra" passnger ,but they dont do that as much any more, guess poeple who egnore the rule dont get off so easy.

I recall a time i was on train 286 and we were pulling out of Rochester, NY. We were going pretty good when a man rushed to the vestibule, where he ws lucky the conducter still was, to shout, "i have to get off." I watched this guy help someone on that didn't need any help, too. He was lucky we stopped in time and he still had a platform to get off on.

Usually if I am off the platform they get a free ride to the next station stop. Their on their own after that. It gives them time to think about how stupid they were. I have stopped when I had a man say his kids were in the car one time. He had to walk about 1/2 mile in the rocks I know one Conductor who had a passenger's son help him and mama on and the train took off and he pulled the air. The son had brought his dad and mom to the station in a limo and disreguarded the announcment. Every thing would have just ended up with a good butt chewing to the son but dear old dad had to put his two cents worth in and tell the Conductor off so that got the whole family thrown off the train. I guess he thought he was special because he came in a limo. What he didn't understand is its a Federial Offence to pull the emergency brake on a passenger train if there is no emergency. He could have gone to jail.

On my 1996 trip (when the Sunset still operated all the way tp Miami), I was sitting in the Sightseer Lounge, and a lady needed to get off at Sebring, but didn't realize we had already stopped there and had started up again, so went chasing after the conductor, who did allow the train to stop a quarter mile or so past the station, but she still had to walk back, and she could have had to ride all the way to Winter Haven.

Confessional (Father forgive me for I have sinned)--
I once did just that on an airplane.
Circa 1983, I accompanied my now deceased girlfriend to ORD, where she was traveling to SFO for business. We were chatting, and I simply boarded the aircraft, a DC-10 , with her - no one challenged me!!!!
On the aircraft, we met a guy I knew (a railfan no less) also going to SFO. Since I'm not known for my "possessiveness", and any girlfriend of mine over the years has been as independent as am I, the three of us were sitting there in a row of seats chatting. Jim simply presumed I was also traveling.
Well possibly someone else remembers here how DC-10's had an electrically operated overhead cabin door. Jerie heard it "uh, Gil", "oh my God, bye guys"
Well, push back had not quite happened, but there was a quick intercom, and a well deserved 'sneer" from an FA. Oh well, had it happened, I guess I would have been "out' 1) a night of sleep, and 2) some $1000 to United for a "walk up' ORD-SFO-ORD.
Obviously, this would never have happened post 9/11. but this did during 1983.
