See the pretty good article on Amtrak's finance troubles, great worth of Amtrak as a travel alternative and great worth to travel managers and travel planners:
BUSH TARGETS AMTRAK FUNDS by Jay Boehmer, Business Travel News, March 21, 2005 issue.

Alas, the article makes it sound as if there's virtually nothing to Amtrak outside the NEC. At least it didn't use the phrase "money-losing long distance trains."

How about, "Amtrak is being killed by starvation," Mr Mineta?

Not only is Amtrak being starved but it's being criticized, bad-mouthed, neglected, made fun of, etc., etc. while 25,000,000 riders used it last year! What hypocrisy! How about if the federal government was loyal to all the 25,000,000 riders. Wouldn't that be nice! Maybe our federal government owes us, at least, a vibrant and efficient and extensive rail public transportation system as an alternative to air and bus travel. How about that!?

If AMTRAK was to be fully funded, what ever that means? What would they do with the money? Would they put it into track improvements, new tracks, high speed tracks, things most travelers would not see, or be aware of. Or would they put money it the more customer pleasing amenities? The BTN Article focuses on the NEC. As I have posted before, perhaps Amtrak needs to be split up regional commuting is much different then the LD's. Honestly does anyone know a buisness person, traveling salesperson (I'm so PC, lol) who has booked a ticket from Chicago to LA. Please prove me wrong. Again as I've said before, if more areas had good comfortable commuter lines more people would look into taking a longer train trip.

The answer must be "ALL OF THE ABOVE" instead of the current "NONE OF THE ABOVE"
