Pepsi seems to be the Cola of the moment. No doubt Pepsico "cut them a better deal", such as providing plasticware (with the Pepsi logo of course) at a price (maybe even gratuitous) less than "market".

But either drink's marketing plan certainly appears that at any food service outlet, "it's one or the other".

Both should be available. Some people, like me, prefer Pepsi while others prefer Coke, although I do enjoy a Coke, from time to time, as a change of pace. In my opinion, offering customers a choice of brands should superceed entering into an exclusivity contract, but money talks.

There's also this topic regarding the same question from a while back: http://www.railforum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi/topic/11/1541.html

Coke /Pepsi
Paper/Plastic
Over easy/ Sunny side up
Chocolate/Vanilla

These are all choices where people have a preference but can live with either option. I've dealt with Pepsi and Coke many times and my experience is that consumers prefer Coke to Pepsi, but Diet Pepsi over Diet Coke. So it makes sense to go with Coke, but Pepsi "works the deal" a lot better than Coke so often Pepsi wins. Tastes vary greatly from region to region and different distributors take different approaches, but my guess is that Pepsi offered Amtrak a better deal so you're drinking Pepsi.

To my knowledge, Amtrak has had an exclusive contract with Pepsi (carrying Pepsi, Sierra Mist, etc) for at least the last 5 years... probably much longer

I cannot recall ever having purchased a coke product on-board an Amtrak train. I'd guess that exclusive contract goes back further than just five years.

FWIW, Amtrak signed an exclusive 7 year contract with Pepsi approx. 7years ago. Prior to that it had been coke products as far back as I can remember.
