I am scheduled to arrive in SAS three weeks from now(going westbound) at 3:00 AM on the Sunset Limited. At the time I booked this train it was running so late that I was not concerned -- but as the time draws closer I am beginning to have some questions as to what to expect at this station at that middle of the nite hour. Are there taxis available? What is available in the station itself if I have to kill a couple of hours? Dee

I arrived here in the middle of the night eastbound on the TX Eagle last summer--same train different car Train was due in before midnight, I think, but was quite late and got in maybe 4AM. I woke up (I was in a sleeper) and went out with the passengers who were leaving the train in San Antonio (some kinda pissed about getting in so late, but many aware it would happen). It was no problem, lots of activity in fact, with all the delinkings. Well, check that; only problem was in getting a taxi there were others needing one too, too few taxis, so the cabby had us share; he dropped me and then took them where they were going. I think I caught the taxi maybe 5:30AM? I took it over to the Hotel Menger and saw the historic lobby etc, then walked over to see the Alamo. It was still dark but there was a guard there and a hotel employee watched me from the door; it seemed safe to do. Afterward I walked back down, had the hotel concierge phone me a taxi to get back to the station in time to reboard; my northbound TX Eagle was leaving 8AM, I believe.

Hi Dee, I have only been to SAS once, last March. I arrived on the eastbound Texas Eagle around 11:00PM and waited for the Sunset which was supposed to depart at 5:40AM westbound (that morning the Sunset was late and arrived around 7:00AM) There were several Taxis waiting for the Texas Eagle, but not enough. I did overhear some of the drivers tell those waiting they would call for more, and it seems within 1/2 hour some more taxis arrived. The station was pretty basic. Two stations attendants, vending machines, etc... There was free wireless internet my laptop connected to in the station ( from one of the local businesses).
Since I had quite a wait, I found a Denny's nearby and a couple bar/grills. For more detail, my webpage on the trip is http://web.mac.com/ameyer1/iWeb/SpringBreak2007 Look for the links to Day2 & 3 "Blog". Hope that helps some. Andy

The other day I was fantasizing wouldn't it be nice if The Heartland Flyer could be extended south to San Antonio. I live in Austin now and it would give us twice a day service and more flexibility for those meets in SA discussed above. I visited the AUS station last week and a new tile roof is being installed. At least the station is centrally located here - unlike the bus station, for example.
I wll be making this connect on Nov 22 from #1 to #22 on my way from New Orleans to Austin. The week before I'll begin my trip by going to Dallas from Austin on #22.
