I need to go to Chicago next month and, much as I'd love to take the train, financially it just doesn't make sense. The cheapest sleeper price from Victorville seems to be $433, no matter what random date I look at in the future. Is this normal these days? They must have been a lot cheaper earlier this decade when I traveled a lot by Amtrak as I could afford it back then - now I struggle to justify it! Mind you, I am married now and wasn't back then.
Two working days "lost" by Amtrak and $589 one way, compared to one "lost" on an airline and $400 round trip.
Any other creative ideas? I tried switching to a coach seat from the final morning to Chicago but it didn't make much of a difference. I guess Amtrak caught on to that idea!

If that were true then all rooms would be booked all week from tonight. But they're not. Granted, from now until Wednesday they're slightly more expensive, but if I went on Wednesday I could get a room at the same price as if I booked for this coming February.
Of course, I could travel coach, but I think I'd be summarily kicked from this board if I admitted such.
