The November 1954 edition of The Railway Magazine contained an article by Robert Legget about the Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire. He was surprised to find that in 1954 it was claiming to be ‘the first mountain climbing railway in the world’.
It is beyond doubt that it is among the pioneer mountain railways of the world, but the first?

Reverend, 1954 was the "vintage" this 13yo kid climbed "The Mount" while at summer camp on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. I've also been up it on the Cog Railway and still again in an auto; both of those with my Mother and Father.
I saw it again during October last year - this time from FL350 flying from BER to EWR. I took a photo from the aircraft's window, but this site does not support photography.
