NY Times
quote:
… Standing somberly behind a microphone at the Vatican, Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced the pope’s death. “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father,” he said. An American of Irish origin, Cardinal Farrell becomes the Vatican’s de facto administrator after the death of a pope. …

As an Episcopalian, I share the sense of loss that all of the Roman Catholic faith must feel this morning.

It was indeed a miracle that, even if he clearly "was out of it", Pope Francis lived to see another Easter.

The World has lost "a good man" - may he rest in peace.

I changed the thread title to reflect the election of Cardinal Robert Prevost as Leo XIV, born in Chicago.

A good friend, who is a devout Roman Catholic, is simply "overjoyed".

I guess it would have "been too much" to have elected Cardinal Supich - head of the Chicago Archdiocese. Cardinal Prevost - Leo XIV - appears to be a "citizen of the World".

I can recall during Episcopal secondary school, when Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli) died during '58, my History teacher saying "they'll never elect an American". Well, here we are sixty seven years later - and the Roman Catholic Church has done just that.

First American, first Augustinian, first Villanova grad, and (probably) first White Sox fan to be elected pope. NY Knicks fans see it as a sign (their team is loaded with ex-Villanova players), although it would take a true act of God to help the Sox.
