So often nowadays, news media reports the distance between two points as "that's 40 minutes from here".
I find this "Newspeak" utterly annoying; and somehow if Andy Rooney were still here, so would he.
Last time I checked, distances are measured in statue miles, nautical miles, or kilometers. My thought is simply tell me how many miles or klicks and I'll worry about how long it will take to get there.
Here is a rail unrelated article from this past Saturday's Journal that well illustrates my point:
All I could think after reading such was "how far away were those Starbucks?"

Likewise. Is that by racecar, horse and buggy, bicycle, motorcycle, jogging, or what? I have been hearing this terminology for a long time. It seems to be more commonly used in urban/suburban area, maybe because the speaker hasn't a clue as to real distances.
Yes, how far away were they from tne nearest Starbucks? What do they put in that stuff anyway? I have a son and a granddaughter that would probabaly go into withdrawal if they had to live without Starbucks. Its good but not that good. I walk past two on my way to someplace where the stuff is cheaper, and to my mind just about as good.

In Texas mileage is almost irrelevant. A 240 mile trip can be about 3 hours or about 4.25 hours, depending on the roads taken.
