Just paid $4.45.9 in my locale today. Saw prices as high as $4.49.9 per US gallon for regular (87 octane per [R+M]÷2 method). And they are still rising at the time of writing.

Mr. Helfner, seems like on each of my seven trips to Salzburg starting in '14, I've always taken a photo of the posted prices at a Shell on Rainerstraße not far from the Hbf.
The August '21 price for Premium (my auto only drinks champagne) was posted at 1.509. I've shown that photo to a neighbor (likely the only one who has never been overseas) to which I got "wow, have they got cheap gas over there!!!
Only hitch; that's Euros per Lit.
Well, assuming my Casio sitting on the desktop knows four function arithmetic that's 1.509 X 1.0899 X 3.786 or "talkin' Yankee", that's $6.23 ga
I fully expect to see that soon posted at my local Shell (they're there in places like LA).

They have prices approaching that level in California now. Newsom is proposing a “rebate” to offset that for consumers, which is simply giving the people their own tax revenue back ultimately.

Which means either a reduction in road maintenance or transfer of money from another pocket with taxes elsewhere to match. Around here the 87 regular is running $3.99.9 per gallon right now, but that is with much lower gas taxes than California. It doesn't hurt me much, but for the people that drive a good bit in their work, this is a killer. (By the way, these same stations were posting Diesel at $4,99,9 per gallon.)
It was said that back when it was found that the area around what is now Birmingham AL was found to have iron ore one one ridge and coal on an adjacent area there were those opposed to setting up the manufacture of iron and steel. To which one person is reputed to have said, do you really want to spend your days following a mule when you are sitting on great wealth? Our anti-drilling, mining and everything else people should be asked that same question.

Regular holding steady at $4.49/gallon for regular in my area. My car has a relatively large four-banger (2.5 liter), but is still quite good on the gas what with the six-speed automatic.

Well $62.11 got me 11.5ga of "champagne" @$5.389ga yesterday for my buggy (that's all it drinks; like its owner, doesn't know what "beer" is) yesterday for 205 miles of driving since March 1.
Most of my trips into town are for the Symphony. If on my own, $6 (senior) on METRA is quite adequate. If accompanied, then drive, as anybody's rail not too convenient for "the other". I doubt if my auto usage will change, even if that last fill-up did cause a "gulp".

Prices hovering around $4.85 on average by me, for regular. Nowhere near the $8.00+ of states like California, but still quite economy-sapping when combined with the associated retail price increases that increased transportation costs (and of course other supply chain problems) have caused.
Aside from my local BJ’s, I was curious about the new Sheetz in Swiftwater PA that sells 88 octane for a lower price per gallon than 87 octane.

Think about the people who burn a lot of gas to make a living. The guy that cuts my yard has raised all his prices around 20% or more just to keep from going under, plus, he says his two-cycle small engine equipment does not like ethanol. He can get it at a few places, and at $1.00+ above the cost of that with ethanol. I have a feeling he is going to have to go up more very soon.

$6.279 for a gallon of "champagne" around here.
At the station, I was talking with a guy with a late model "S" Bennie, who has started to "cheat" with 89 "mid grade". He said "It runs well enough and a mechanic said long term it won't hurt".
Finally, on my now completed road trip to Connecticut, "Lady Lex" delivered some 30mpg fill ups. Thanks!

In a relatively low gas tax state, $4.39.9 most recent fillup for mid grade, comparted to $2.29.9 fifteen months ago. Inflation less than 10%? Who are you kidding? I just bought groceries. A dozen eggs $2.29 compared to $1.09 a year ago. For basic needs, I would suspect inflation is more like 50%+ or more.

Current average $3.70 by me. Things in California are remarkably different, exceeding $6/gallon.

The stuff has certainly come down since this topic originated. Presently nearest my house; $4.15 for 87 $5.06 for 92.
Comforting as I start a road trip first to Virginia then Connecticut and return next week.
Now what has REALLY gone through the roof are tolls. "Sticker Shock" checking the rates to load up my EZ-Pass for the trip.
