I have been reading alot of the threads on rail forum and all of the excellent ideas and some of the not so excellent. I have been wondering where Amtraks financial info is on there site or wherever. Such things as ridership in general. And how much money they are making-losing. Or what the goverment thinks etc. Before You say lets totally change the #1-2 trains you have to look into some things. Amtrak needs to get more money to work on the solutions but if they dont get there funding than they need to cut the Sunset Limited.
(I have been righting 2 posts at the same time...please take a look at my other one on the "My Amtrak Proposal" thread.

If Amtrak cuts the Sunset, then the cities of Houston, El Paso, and Tucson will be completely devoid of all passenger rail service. Not a good idea. Those areas have pretty large population bases. Cutting routes isn't the answer. As it has been proven with the Sunset, late train's don't mean poorly patronized trains.

January through May 2004 monthly reports were posted last time I saw (they are around 100 pages each). Lots of detailed info there on ridership and revenue, even broken down by train. Lots of metrics and statistics. All good info - but hope it leads to good and better decision making, as financial reports are meant to do, among other things.
On an aside, I was surprised the Sunset was not doing worse than what it was - to be perfectly honest (at least through May).
